One of the most controversial flops of the 1990s, Katheryn Bigelow's Strange Days (1995) cost well over $40 million to make, grossing less than one-fifth that amount at the box office. However, it is an unfairly maligned masterpiece about the dangers of technology being perverted for criminal means. Set in the then-near-future of 1999, the film follows Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) a former cop who now deals in a tech that allows users to experience actual memories of people. However, when the committing of an actual murder turns up as one of the discs Lenny is dealing, all hell breaks loose around him, right on the brink of the new millennium and a burgeoning Los Angeles race war. The film is nothing if not ambitious, attempting to do a lot in just under two and a half hours, but we think Bigelow could've at least doubled her box office prospects by giving us more than just Ralph Fiennes shirtless. Show that hog, Ralph!
