Review

Being imprisoned wouldn’t seem so bad if you could land a sexy cellmate as seen in The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” (1982), Frank Darabont’s cinematic adaptation is set in 1947 Portland, Maine. It centers around banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who is convicted of the double murder of his wife and her lover. In fact, he’s sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at the titular fictional penitentiary. Staunchly proclaiming his innocence, Andy’s pleas are wholly ignored and he finds himself having a difficult time coping with life behind bars. Of course, it doesn’t help that he must deal with degenerate inmates (Bill Bolender, Mark Rolston), a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton) and cruel guards (Don McManus, Ned Bellamy) led by the sadistic Captain Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown). While trying not to fall victim to his unfair treatment, the determined convict uses his banking skills to survive lockup and carve a better existence for himself before he can make a run for it. Since this is a prison story, we get the obligatory hose-down scene. As such, we are treated to a view of Tim’s nude chest. If that’s not hot enough, a slight hint of the actor’s ass certainly steams up the screen. Maybe that’s why this period drama scored seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Morgan Freeman), Adapted Screenplay (Darabont), Cinematography (Roger Deakins), and Film Editing (Richard Francis-Bruce). Yet Mr. Man was most won over when Mr. Robbins flashed his flesh!
